چکیده

In this paper, we evaluate the packet loss resilience of the recently developed MPEG-4 Fine-Granular-Scalability (FGS) video coding method for Internet streaming applications. Since unrecoverable packet losses are very common over the Internet, the focus of this study is to determine how robust the MPEG-4 FGS coding tool is under unrecoverable IP packet-losses over a wide range of connection qualities (i.e. at various bit-rates). Our extensive study was performed upon an entire set of sequences, bit-rates and packet-loss rates. As shown in this paper, under Unequal Packetloss Protection, FGS provides a clear advantage over non-scalable coding. If Equal Packet-loss Protection is employed, FGS performance is still considerably better, in particular under moderate-to-high packet-loss ratios.

A New Unequal Error Protection Technique Based on the Mutual Information of the MPEG-4 Video Frames over Wireless Networks

The performance of video transmission over wireless channels is limited by the channel noise. Thus many error resilience tools have been incorporated into the MPEG-4 video compression method. In addition to these tools, the unequal error protection (UEP) technique has been proposed to protect the different parts in an MPEG-4 video packet with different channel coding rates based on the rate...

Adaptive motion-compensation fine-granular-scalability (AMC-FGS) for wireless video

Transmission of video over wireless and mobile networks requires a scalable solution that is capable of adapting to the varying channel conditions in real-time (bit-rate scalability). Furthermore, video content needs to be coded in a scalable fashion to match the capabilities of a variety of devices (complexity scalability). These two properties—bit rate and complexity scalability—provide the f...

Partial Transcaling for Wireless Packet Video

Scalable coding provides many advantages for video transmission over packet networks that lack Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees. Meanwhile, it is well known that the benefits of scalable coding come at the expense of degradation in video quality or reduction in coding efficiency when compared with non-scalable video compressed at a particular bitrate. Recently, the notion of TranScaling (TS)...

Scalable Internet video using MPEG-4

Real-time streaming of audio-visual content over Internet Protocol (IP) based networks has enabled a wide range of multimedia applications. An Internet streaming solution has to provide real-time delivery and presentation of a continuous media content while compensating for the lack of Quality-of-Service (QoS) guarantees over the Internet. Due to the variation and unpredictability of bandwidth ...
